The 54321 grounding model helps manage anxiety by focusing on the present moment through your senses. It involves identifying 5 things you see, 4 things you touch, 3 things you hear, 2 things you smell, and 1 thing you taste. This sensory engagement (or blocking) can help bring calmness and control when feeling overwhelmed.

This kit aims to provide ONE item to stimulate or block each sense. It is supplied in a small tin, making it handy for travelling.

  • Ear plugs – to block over-stimulating noise.
  • Fidget popper – listen to the audible pop and feel the release of tension as you do so.
  • Worry stone – re-direct any fidgeting with this tactile worry stone. Each stone has a different texture, with some smooth and some rough. Which one will you get?
  • Scented lip balm – focus on the scent and feel of the lip balm as you re-direct your energy into something more relaxing.
  • Fidget ring – re-direct active fingers with the soothing, repetitive motion that the fidget ring encourages.
  • Lavender scented sachet – lavender is known to help people relax.

The 54321 model

Our 54321 kits are based on the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding model. This is a grounding technique designed to help manage anxiety and bring your focus back to the present moment. It’s a simple yet effective exercise that engages all five of your senses. Here’s how it works:

When you feel anxiety, an overwhelming emotion, or even just stressed, find:

  • 5 things you can see: Identify five things in your surroundings that you can see.
  • 4 things you can touch: Notice four things you can physically touch, focusing on their texture and how they feel.
  • 3 things you can hear: Pay attention to three things you can hear, whether they’re near or far.
  • 2 things you can smell: Identify two things you can smell, whether they’re nearby or something you can remember.
  • 1 thing you can taste: Think of one thing you can taste, like a piece of gum or a sip of water.

Some individuals may find that temporarily blocking one of their senses, like sight or hearing, can actually enhance their ability to ground themselves using the other senses. For example, closing your eyes might help you better focus on the sounds around you, or putting on noise-cancelling headphones could help you concentrate on what you see and feel.

Our 54321 grounding kits contain items that stimulate – or block – certain sense. Some are more comprehensive than others, so please do read each kit description. These kits can be a handy way to practice the 54321 method when you need some additional support to stay grounded and calm.
