Allied health professions (AHP’s)/Allied healthcare/Allied health fields (etc) – The NHS recognises 14 allied health professions as follows:
- Art therapists
- Drama therapists
- Music therapists
- Podiatrists
- Dietitians
- Occupational therapists
- Operating department practitioners
- Orthoptists
- Osteopaths
- Paramedics
- Physiotherapists
- Prosthetists and orthotists
- Radiographers
- Speech and language therapists
However, we also recognise our colleagues working in the various psychology services, counselling, alternative healthcare, complimentary healthcare, natural healthcare and any other healthcare field.
Avoidant Personality Disorder (AvPD) – is a Cluster C personality disorder which is characterised by excessive social anxiety and inhibition, an intense desire for (yet contradictory) fear of intimacy, severe feelings of inadequacy and inferiority, and an overreliance on avoidance of feared stimuli (e.g. self-imposed social isolation) as a maladaptive coping method.
Emotion wheel – developed by Dr Gloria Willcox, this handy tool helps us put words to our emotions (see image below).
Hypervigilant – a state of increased alertness where you’re extremely sensitive to your surroundings.
Mindfulness – the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.
Negativity bias – tendency to register negative stimuli more readily, but also to dwell on these events.
Personality disorders – a type of mental disorder in which you have a rigid and unhealthy pattern of thinking, functioning and behaving.
Reframing – a technique used to shift your mindset so you’re able to look at a situation, person, or relationship from a slightly different perspective
Safety behaviours – behaviours that are carried out (either overtly or covertly) in specific situations, in order to prevent feared outcomes. Examples are distraction, preparing or checking.
Thinking patterns – an exaggerated pattern of thought that’s not based on facts
