Calming the ADHD Mind: A gentle guide for when focus feels far away

3 November 2025 by Louise Leave a Comment

A gentle guide for when focus feels far away The ADHD mind isn’t broken. It’s vivid, dynamic, and deeply responsive—often alive with colour, movement, and possibility. But in moments of overwhelm, that richness can feel like too much. Thoughts stack. Feelings collide. And the usual relaxation tools—stillness, silence, breath counting—can feel impossibly far away. Often, this isn’t resistance. It’s saturation - overwhelm. So instead of asking the ADHD mind to “calm down,” we offer it something else: a shift. A sensory anchor. In essence, we meet it where it is, and transform it into something else. Here are a few gentle ways to support calm without forcing stillness: Tip #1: Let movement lead Stillness can feel like pressure. Try swaying, stretching, or walking in loops. Let your … [Read more...] about Calming the ADHD Mind: A gentle guide for when focus feels far away

Cosy Calm: Creating a Relaxation Corner at Home

11 October 2025 by Louise

cosy nooks with soft or useful lighting and candles or other soothing items

Blankets, soft lighting, and a sense of sanctuary—this season invites us to slow down. As the days shorten and the air cools, many of us feel the pull toward warmth, stillness, and gentle rituals. Creating a relaxation corner at home isn’t about interior design or perfection—it’s about crafting a space that feels safe, warm, and yours. Whether you have a whole room or just a quiet corner, here are some ways to shape a nook that welcomes rest. Tip #1: Start with What You Already Have You don’t need to buy anything new. A favourite chair, a soft throw, a lamp with a warm glow—these are enough. The goal isn’t transformation. It’s intention. Choose a spot that feels tucked away, even if it’s just the end of the sofa or a corner of your bedroom. Let it be a place where you can … [Read more...] about Cosy Calm: Creating a Relaxation Corner at Home

Always thinking the worst?

4 February 2024 by Louise

Do you often imagine the worst possible outcome of a situation? Do you worry excessively about things that are unlikely to happen? Do you feel anxious and stressed about the future? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be experiencing a kind of cognitive distortion known as catastrophising. What is catastrophising? Catastrophising is a type of negative thinking that involves exaggerating the probability and severity of negative events. For example, if you make a mistake at work, you may think that you will lose your job, ruin your reputation, and never find another job. Or if your partner is late for a date, you may think that they have been in an accident, cheated on you, or left you for someone else. What is the impact of catastrophising? Catastrophising can have a … [Read more...] about Always thinking the worst?

6 unexpected causes of poor mental health: surprising culprits

12 July 2023 by Louise

Unhealthy eating habits, insufficient exercise, excessive alcohol consumption, and lack of sleep are all well-known contributors to poor mental health. However, there are other less-known factors that can also lead to mental health issues. Here are six surprising things you might not expect to be affecting your mental health: 1. Comparing yourself to other people Our unique differences are what make us who we are. It's natural to compare ourselves to others, but it's essential to recognise that we are not the same. In fact, embracing our individuality makes life more exciting and diverse. However, constantly questioning how we can be more like others can be detrimental to our mental health. This form of self-reflection can be damaging, especially when comparing ourselves to … [Read more...] about 6 unexpected causes of poor mental health: surprising culprits

Hypnotherapy: The Secret to Flying Without Fear

13 June 2023 by Louise

Background Brian was a 40-year-old man who had a moderate fear of flying since his early twenties. He had flown on a plane a few times before, but he always felt anxious, tense, and uncomfortable during the flight. He avoided flying as much as possible and preferred to travel by car or train. He felt embarrassed and frustrated by his fear, as it prevented him from enjoying holidays with his family or attending work events. He decided to seek help from a hypnotherapist after his boss offered him a promotion that required frequent travel by plane. He wanted to accept the offer and advance his career, but he was also worried about how he would cope with flying. Hypnotherapy Sessions Brian had four sessions of hypnotherapy over a period of one month. The hypnotherapist used a combination … [Read more...] about Hypnotherapy: The Secret to Flying Without Fear

Case Study: Hypnotherapy Successfully Helped 13 Year Old with School Phobia

20 May 2023 by Louise

Today's case study is an interesting but long one, so go grab a cuppa :) Background Clare was a 13-year-old girl who developed a severe school phobia after being bullied by older students at her school. She refused to go to school and experienced panic attacks, nausea, headaches, and non-specific stomach pains whenever she thought about school. She also had low self-esteem and felt isolated from her peers. Her parents tried to persuade her to go to school, but she became angry and defiant. They consulted a psychologist who suggested hypnotherapy as a possible treatment. At the beginning, she rated her anxiety about going to school as 9 out of 10 (with 10 being extremely anxious). Hypnotherapy sessions Clare agreed to try hypnotherapy after learning that it was a safe and natural … [Read more...] about Case Study: Hypnotherapy Successfully Helped 13 Year Old with School Phobia
