How to improve self-esteem

2 September 2022 by Louise

Graphic shows 5 ways to improve self esteem. These are expanded upon in text underneath the graphic.Today we’re looking at 5 key ways in which you can improve your self-esteem.

1. Accept yourself

Self-acceptance is:

The act of accepting yourself and all your personality traits exactly as they are. You accept them no matter whether they are positive or negative. This includes your physical and mental attributes. – Waters 2021

Waters also explains that beyond self-esteem, self-acceptance leads to many benefits, such as:

  • Control of emotions
  • Forgiveness
  • Improvement in self-confidence
  • Helping you be yourself

If only we accepted ourselves the way that we openly accept others. I always find it interesting that we often set such high standards for ourselves, compared to others. Don’t do it; you owe it to yourself to be kind to yourself.

2. Value yourself

If you have good self-esteem, then you probably value yourself at least average. You probably also make time and space to take part in hobbies – something which raises your self-esteem further. And I’m willing to bet that you recognise your positive traits, whether it’s your ability to maintain your own car, the mean way you balance a household budget, your ability to plan a road trip, or something else. All of this helps us understand our value and our place in this world.

3. Understand yourself

Understanding yourself and what makes you tick, is often the starting point for building further skills. After all, you must know your interests, needs, wishes and goals before you can take on new activites aimed at improving your skills. But when you do improve your skills (it doesn’t even matter what area those skills are in – usually) you will often find that your self-esteem also follows. Give it a go and tell us about your experiences.

4. Look after yourself

When you listen to your own needs and put them ahead of others, you send a message to your subconscious mind that you value yourself. If you find yourself constantly not looking after yourself, listen out for any associated internal self-talk.

You might find yourself saying things like “I don’t deserve to….”. It can be difficult to this, especially when you aren’t used to doing this, but it should get easier the more you do it. If it doesn’t, or if you find it’s a persistent issue, ask us about whether hypnotherapy could help in your case. When we do hypnotherapy, we speak directly to your subconscious mind, which should help you remember to listen to your self -talk AND tackle your self-esteem directly.

5. Empower yourself

When people interact, they usually do it in one of three ways:

  • Passively
  • Aggressively or
  • Assertively

Empowering yourself is allowing yourself to interact assertively, expressing your wants and needs in a clear manner. When you have a good sense of self-esteem, you’re more likely to communicate in an assertive and empowered way. This is partly because you’re not looking for, or requiring people to like you because it’s the only way you can feel good about yourself. You simply don’t seek the approval of others because you know your worth and you know you’re worthy.

Final note

Improving your self-esteem can be bit of an iterative process, with it potentially taking a few attempts before you find what works for you. However, we recommend starting here and adjusting to suit your needs and goals.
