Today we’re lookng at 6 key ways in which you can promote mental well-being in your own life. So let’s jump right into it.
1. End toxic relationships
Scott (2020) defines a toxic relationships as follows:
A toxic relationship is one that makes you feel unsupported, misunderstood, demeaned, or attacked. – Scott (2020)
The term doesn’t apply to just sexual partners, but every other sphere too, whether it’s your employer, a family member, a coach, or somebody else.
2. Talk to friends
You know the saying “a problem shared is a problem halved”? It’s said for a good reason, because sharing a problem allows you to get a different perspective, process your own thoughts, feelings and emotions and sometimes just doing that allows you to reach a conclusion or decision and maybe find the answer you’re looking for.
3. Find a hobby
Following a hobby can provide you with a sense of enrichment and really add value to your life. Never underestimate the importance of following your hobbies. In fact, it’s usually when you (think you) have little time for hobbies, that you need them the most! So, do be sure to prioritise hobbies for at least part of the day, even if it’s just after 7pm, or weekends.
4. Eat healthily
Eating healthily sets up your mind and body for optimum performance. Remember though that (for most people) it’s not possible or practical to eat healthily 100% of the time. So do be sure to allocate some time for fun and enjoyment through eating. This migh involve letting yourself eat the more ‘frivelous’ foods after a certain time or on certain days of the week.
5. Prioritise sleep and rest
When you prioritise sleep and rest (however rest looks like for you), it allows you to ‘recharge your batteries’ and leads to you gaining more resilience for dealing with the ups and downs of life. Rest doesn’t necessarily look like sleeping or doing nothing; for some people it looks like taking exercise, seeing a friend, walking the dog, following a hobby or watching a football match. Whatever the activity, if you feel refreshed and energised after it, then it’s ‘working’.
6. Exercise
Similar to eating healthily, exercising regularly sets up your body for maximum performance. Many people report feeling refrshed, energised and gaining a new sense of perspective when taking exercise, or in the period immediately following it.
Final note
Prioritising mental health can look slightly different for everybody, but hopefully this gave you an idea of what areas you could focus on. Start there and adjust accordingly.
