In today’s post, we’re basically talking about the power of ‘having a try‘.
When I first graduated as a clinical hypnotherapist, I am pretty sure I had very low confidence in my skills, despite having had some great results from my clients and, I think part of the reason was that I just didn’t have any sense of direction because I just wanted to go everywhere! Though I had no real clue about where to go first.
Running around in circles, with no sense of direction was exhausting and left me feealing frustrated. I’d repeatedly ask myself ‘am I good enough?’, ‘do I have enough skills?’ and ‘can I do this?’. And when I asked these questions to my friends and family, without exception thay would always answer ‘yes’, ‘yes’ and ‘yes’ to those questions. So why didn’t I feel as confident as they did?
In reality though, I always gave it a try, because I figured I really wouldn’t know how good or bad I was, without having a try. And that simple principle has always held good over the last 10 yeas I’ve been in practice.
So, I’ve always given everything a go, and sometimes things worked out, sometimes they didn’t, but over the last 10 years I’ve had a go at:
1. Working with children, despite being adamant I wasn’t going to (for fear of making a mistake in this vulnerable group), but everything has always worked out and I love working with kids now, as it affords me opportunities to put into practice what I studied on my Child Health diploma (which I obtained in 2000).
2. Working with people with dementia. I had no idea whether it would work or not, because there was surprisingly little information in the public domain at thise time. However, I really managed to ease the stress and anxiety in my first client with dementia…my very own mother-in-law.
3. I went into companies (local at first, then national) to provide stress management hypnosis sessions for their workers. I had really good feedback about these, which really helped to spurr me on.
4. Even though I didn’t think I’d enjoy delivering hybnobirthing sessions, I gave them a go. I utterly hated it (maybe because I felt I lacked the skills to do this), but at least I gave it a go – and you’ll be pleased to hear that I (personally) don’t offer hypnobirthing. Though I know ofother hypnotherapists who love doing it.
5. I wanted to move away from pre-packaged hypnotherapy courses, created by people external to my business, so I developed my own programmes. I’ve since developed Confidence Rocket, The Slimming Guru and Student Success, with more to follow.
Was my work in those early days perfect? Absolutely not, but you can bet that I’d give it my very best shot.
