Here are 5 signs of burnout that we all must know if we want to prevent or resolve it:
Sign #1: You feel the need to numb your stress
This can be achieved by a number of escapism methods, such as food, illegal drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, sex, gambling etc. Generally, the method of escapism works “too well” for the person, causing the person to keep selecting that as a coping method. Without switching this effective (yet unhealthy) coping method with something just as effective (and healthy), progress is unlikely to be made. The key is to build a list of possible alternatives, which still achieve some kind of escapism, but which are healthy and not relied on excessively. Doing work on confidence and self-esteem, at the same time, can also help.
Sign #2: Your memory is affected.
Burnout causes stress and, for many people, that translates to a significant memory issue. I have literally known GP’s refer clients to dementia teams for assessments, because their memory is so affected. Once seen by a member of the dementia team, it’s is often quickly realised that the person is suffering from chronis stress, not the early stages of dementia.
Sign #3: Your focus is affected.
This is related to #2 in so much that, you can’t expect to have maximum focus when your head is full of anxious thoughts, due to the stress of burnout. Often, even short periods of mindfulness or editation can bring somebody down to a workable level of function and focus.
Sign 4: You feel overwhelmed
You feel overwhelmed at the mere thought of everything that you have to do every day. You wonder how on earth you’re going to spread your already-thin energy across all of those tasks too. Our advice with this one is to break down a task into smaller, more achievable chunks – and only work on one task at a time. Try it and I’m sure you’ll notice a reduction in stress.
Sign 5: Things no longer satisfy you
You find that things which you used to enjoy, no longer satisfy you.
