What is sensory grounding?
The 5-4-3-2-1 method is a sensory-based grounding technique designed to help manage anxiety and bring your focus back to the present moment. It’s a simple exercise that engages all five of your senses. When dealing with a difficult emotion, the person uses cues in their environment to identify:
- 5 things you can see.
- 4 things you can touch.
- 3 things you can hear.
- 2 things you can smell.
- 1 thing you can taste.
How it helps
By focusing on these sensory experiences, you can help interrupt the cycle of overwhelming thoughts and bring yourself back to the present moment. It’s a useful technique for moments of anxiety or stress.
