How to get rid of Post-Lockdown anxiety

20 May 2022 by Louise

Are you still feeling anxious and overwhelmed at the thought of going out and socialising again after multiple lock-downs?
If you are, then you’re not alone. I’m a clinical hypnotherapist and I have some excellent tips to help you get back out there, living the life that you want to live.
Many of you who are newly struggling with leaving the house post-lockdowns might be wondering how something that was easy and just felt “normal” now make you feel so anxious”. But you know, there’s actually a very good reason for this anxiety – and it’s not because there’s something wrong with you.
You see, what we do every day becomes our comfort zone – and it’s simply that your comfort zone has changed. But, what happens when you try to leave your comfort zone is that your brain is hard-wired to send a stress-response to your body. Your body is alerting to the fact that something is different, so you must be on alert. Your body then sends extra stress hormones (adrenaline) into your bloodstream, which creates symptoms which many of you would recognise as anxiety.
So, how can we stop that anxiety getting the better of us? Despite us having many ways that we can overcome this anxiety, you might not have thought about some of them on our list,

Tip 1:  Don’t avoid things.

Avoidance feeds anxiety. When you avoid something, you’re reinforcing the notion that something needs avoiding. For example, you might avoud something because you think you won’t be successful, or because you find something unpleasant…whatever. But avoiding something just maintains the avoidance habit.
In time, your body recognises that a given situation is potentially dangerous and sends you a clear alert (symptoms) that something is danferous and must be avoided. And what happens when we perceive danger? That’s right, we release the stress hormone Adrenaline!

Tip 2: Start small.

Starting small presents you with a challenge that feels achievable. Not only that, when you achieve your small goal, it gives you the confidence to tackle bigger things and motivates you to complete bigger challenges. The more you do this, the more your comfort zone increases around those experiences.

Tip 3: Focus on the right things.

What happens when we focus on things that make us feel anxious is that it makes is more anxious. So you could say that focusing on the wrong thing can increase our anxiety. You could try focusing on something that brings you joy, whatever that looks like to you.

Tip 4: Butterflies are good!

I don’t know about you, but when when I do something new, or something I haven’t done for ages, I get a really intense feeling of butterflies inside my tummy, and it makes me feel uncomfortable and anxious. Amd I have to remind myself that the butterflies are anticipation and excitement, rather than anxiety.
So, I wonder if, the next time you’re in this situation you could remind yourself that you’re feeling excitement and anticipation.
