A natural response to feeling anxious is to do everything you can to avoid whatever it is that’s making you feel anxious.
Say, for example, you became anxious about crowded places during the pandemic. And eventually, you might have decided to avoid crowded place completely.
And that’s ok for a while, but then you might realise that travelling on public transport makes you feel anxious…so you start avoiding that too.
And that’s ok for a while, but then you realise that shopping in the supermarket makes you feel anxious. So, you start shopping online and choose to avoid the supermarket. And that’s ok for a while.
But then you notice that being around people makes you feel anxious…so you start to avoid people, even friends.
And you go on like this, avoiding more and more things until eventually, your life is a fraction of what it used to be. Your world has shruk so much that it’s unrecognisable compared to your ‘old life’.
All of this usually happens so slowly and insidiously that you don’t realise your world is getting smaller and smaller.
So, how do you start to take your life back?
We recommend starting small, because if you try to take your life back all in one go, you’ll simply get overwhelmed and your subconscious mind can sometimes ‘dig its heels in’ and sabbotage your efforts.
So, you could start by picking just one thing that feels manageable to you, and bring that back into your life. Then start by adding one more thing…then another…and another until finally, your life is back to where you want it to be.
