If you’re struggling with low mood and a feeling of “I can’t be bothered to do anything right now”, this post was written for you. I want to tell you something that many people do when they’re depressed, and it’s something that keeps them stuck exactly where they are.
Low mood essentially generates a powerful urge to do just about everything that will keep you stuck whwre you are, ultimately making your mood worse. For example, say you wake up and you just don’t feel good. The natural urge – or the trap that many depressed people fall into – is to cancel your plans, stay in bed and just hide away from the world and everybody in it. And let’s be honest sometimes we do need that, right?
But the problem is that doing this is addictive because, once you decide to avoid something, you get instant relief like “Thank goodness, I don’t have to face the day today”.Of course, that’s a really powerful sensation because we all love the feeling that we get when stress is suddenly lifted, don’t we?
But the longer you stay hidden – and the more time you spend anxiously mulling things over, and especially mulling over the thiings that make you feel depressed -the more likely you are to feel overwhelming depression and the more likely you are to spiral down and down.
If this post resonates with you, maybe it’s time to get some help – and you’ll be pleased to know that there are many forms of help available to you.
Clinical hypnotherapy
This can be helpful where clients aren’t the “talking type” and prefer to internally process things,. It can sometimes be useful to use this as a starting point as hypnotherapy guides you to a place within you where your attention is laser-focused, making it easier to process what’s going on in your head.
Traditional talking therapies
Traditional counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is found helpful by some people. CBT helps you “unpick” situations, thoughts and feelings, so tat you better understand your behaviours.
Improve your resilience to stress
Stress often makes mood disorders, such as depression worse. So, by regularly de-stressing, you can make room in your mind for any new stress that might arise. De-stressing is different for everyone, but it might look like:
- Colouring in a colouring book
- Phoning a friend for a chat
- Having a nice hot cup of tea
- Reading a book
- Going for a walk
- Watching kittens on You Tube
- Playing with your dog
Every moment that you’re not sitting there ruminating over the negatives in your life, takes you further away from your limit.
