‘No’ is one of the most powerful words in the English language, yet it’s a word that many people struggle with, to some degree. However, when we understand how to say ‘no’, it has the power to transform your life. Truly…just try it. William Ury explains this in his book The Power of a Positive ‘No’ (and no, I don’t have shares in the book).
When confronted by a situation where they might need to say ‘no’, some people can really feel a sense of panic, which can be quite unexpected, sometimes disabling and, often, causes internal feelings of being incapable, worthless, stupid {insert derogatory words here}. But I’m here today to tell you that ot doesn’t need to be like this.
When we start framing ‘no’ more positively, it seems to offer us a sense of freedom, in a way which is more likely to get a positive response from the recipient. When we are able to do this, we can put aside fear that we’ll get fired for daring to even suggest the word ‘no’. We can release ourselves from the worry that we will upset people. It’s true that, at first, some people can be taken aback by your newly acquired assertiveness skills. However, that does fade as the person continues being assertive, expressing their expectations and wants.
We recognise that it can be difficult to tackle assertiveness, if you do have difficulties with this, but help is out there. We can help you become more assertive and put aside the guilt and fear that often comes along with being more assertive.
